Congressional, June 16-19

BETHESDA, Md. — The banter between the world's best golfers and the Fourth Estate can be endlessly illuminating. In the run-up to the 111th U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, Luke Donald said Tuesday, "If you're not in contention, you don't have a chance to win." (True.) Dustin Johnson said, "You know the U.S. Open is one of the four majors." (Right again.) He added, "It's one of the best majors that we play in." (One might even call it one of the four best.)

American Girl Doll store at Tysons Corner ?

By Associated Press, Published: June 14
McLEAN, Va. — If you’re a fan of Kit, Addy or Josefina, you probably squealed with delight when you found out an American Girl store was opening at Tysons Corner. And you’re not alone. Several thousand girls and their parents are expected to line up June 18 to surround themselves with dolls, clothes, books and the signature red and pink celebration of girlhood.

Hailey Irwin, 10, of Washington says she has been to the company’s New York City store, the closest one until now, but she plans to line up at the grand opening. “I have all the history books. I’ve read them all,” said Hailey, who also has five of the dolls at home.

Hackers report taking down CIA website.

Notorious hacker group LulzSec isn't pulling punches—it now claims to have taken down the CIA's website just today, Wednesday afternoon.

"Tango down - cia.gov - for the lulz," the group wrote on its official Twitter feed just after 6pm ET.

And again, shortly thereafter: "Lulz Security, where the entertainment is always at your expense, whether you realize it or not. Wrecking your infrastructures since 2011."

The CIA's site appears to be up as I'm typing this, but it's extremely slow to load. CBS News grabbed a screenshot of the "timed out" error and reports that the CIA has admitted it "was looking into these reports," but had no further comment.

A second attack LulzSec doesn't yet appear to be taking credit for—perhaps because it appears to have failed—was revealed this afternoon by the Senate. According to CBS News, Deputy Senate Sergeant at Arms Martina Bradford said LulzSec had tried for a second time to breach the Senate's

What is going on in the police department - that they steal?

By The Associated Press
WASHINGTON — A District of Columbia police officer was charged Tuesday with scamming an elderly woman she was assigned to help, authorities said.

Sgt. Aisha Hackley was arrested on a theft charge at the police department’s Second District headquarters, where she works. The 35-year-old was released on personal recognizance and is due back in court later this month.

Hackley forged the signature of an 85-year-old woman she met last December during a fraud investigation, depositing 10 checks from the woman’s Bank of America account that totaled more than $43,000, according to court charging documents. Eight of the checks were made payable to Aisha Jackson, which authorities say is another name for Hackley, and two were written out to Kevin Jackson, her son.

The older woman contacted Bank of America on or about May 31 after noticing a series of suspicious checks charged against her account. She later told a fraud investigator that the signature on eight of the checks was not hers, that she would not have authorized the checks for

School is out? What will kids do?

Policymakers and the public have become increasingly concerned about how young people spend their out-of-school time. Too much custodial day care inhibits preschool development and school readiness. Lack of after-school care sends too many young children with latchkeys to empty homes. For older youths with nothing to do after school, there is frequently mischief to be had with friends including drugs, casual sex, and petty crime. Worst of all, a lack of enriching and fun activities for kids of any age when they are out of school stifles the development of a range of competencies all children need to develop en route to adulthood.2 In this era of two-salary or single-headed families, challenges separate kids of any means from appropriate out-of-school experiences. But research has shown that these challenges are by far the greatest for children living in poverty.

Georgetown (Washington, D.C.)

In my opinion, this is a good place to visit. What do you think?

Georgetown is a neighborhood located in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., along the Potomac River waterfront. Founded in 1751, the city of Georgetown substantially predated the establishment of the city of Washington and the District of Columbia. Georgetown retained its separate municipal status until 1871, when it was assimilated into the city of Washington. Today, the primary commercial corridors of Georgetown are M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, which contain high-end shops, bars, and restaurants. Georgetown is home to the main campus of Georgetown University and numerous landmarks, such as the Old Stone House, the oldest standing building in Washington. The embassies of France, Mongolia, Sweden, Thailand, and Ukraine are located in Georgetown.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C & O Canal) is a national historic park that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time Georgetown and Alexandria were major ports for distribution of tobacco, grains, whiskey, furs, timber and other items. Cumberland, Maryland was a key producer of these items and the 184-mile stretch of the Potomac River was the main transportation route between Cumberland and the Chesapeake Bay.

Food for thoughts.

Streetcars;

I do not understand the reason for the District Of Columbus to build a streetcar transpiration system. When they had trouble with the streetcars in 1962 they had to remove them.

It's called the "Great Tokai Earthquake" - a predicted disaster southwest of Tokyo that Japan has spent trillions of yen preparing for, based on the inexact science of predicting earthquakes.

But Friday's 8.9-magnitude quake happened in a completely different subduction zone - where two oceanic plates collide. So is Japan still at risk for another great quake?

Since 1976, the quake-prone country has warned its citizens about the possibility of an 8.0 quake off the coast of Shizuoka prefecture, located about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Tokyo. Friday's quake was centered offshore some 230 miles (373 km) northeast of Toyko.

Japan's government has even provided a 14-page guidebook on the Tokai earthquake theory - which warns, "It would not be surprising if a huge earthquake happened tomorrow" - and how to prepare for it.

It's all based on the fact that there hasn't been a major quake along an area between the two plates that collide off Shizuoka's coastline in over 150 years. That means a lot of energy has built up and will eventually release in an earthquake.

While scientists can be very certain where a quake will occur, they cannot predict when such events will happen - particularly in Japan.

"The tectonics of Japan are very complicated because they have three plates coming together beneath that country: the North American plate to the west, the Eurasian plate to the east, and the Philippine plate somewhat to the southeast," said research geophysicist Morgan Moschetti with the National Earthquake Information Center.

"Generally we can give ideas where this will happen based on (history) … but ... we can't predict the times of earthquakes."

That's not to say they can't predict that a great quake will trigger numerous aftershocks. Moschetti said the aftershocks resulting from Friday's event "will continue for a long time."

The release of energy from Friday's event – which happened along the subduction zone between the Eurasian and North American plates - will have have no effect on alleviating the pressure building up between Eurasian and Philippine plates, where the Great Tokai quake is predicted to happen.

So after Japan picks up the pieces from this disaster, it will have to start preparing for what could be another one.
